Terms/Phrases to Know

AAFSA: The African-American Fraternal and Sororal Association, the governing body of Stanfords historically-black fraternities and sororities.
Active: A fully-initiated member of a fraternity/sorority
Bid: A formal invitation to pledge membership to a fraternity/sorority
Chapter: The individuals comprising the local group of a national collegiate fraternity/sorority
Hazing: Any activity done in connection with a student organization that causes or is reasonably likely to cause another student to suffer bodily danger, physical harm, or significant personal degradation or humiliation. It is prohibited by all national Fraternities, the State of California, Stanford University, and the Stanford Inter-Fraternity Council
IFC: The Inter-Fraternity Council, the governing body of the 11 fraternities within this guide at Stanford
Initiation: The formal ceremonies/rituals whereby new members confirm membership in their chapter and gain full membership privileges
ISC: The Inter-Sorority Council, the governing body of the 7 NPC women's fraternities and sororities at Stanford
MGC: The Multicultural Greek Council, the governing body of Stanford’s 5 Multicultural fraternities and sororities
Philanthropy: Charitable organizations/causes a Greek organization may sponsor
Potential New Member: An unaffiliated individual who participates in Recruitment (you!)
Recruitment: The process by which chapters evaluate/select new members
